Heraty, Peter & Ellen M. Sullivan - 1900 Census -
Notes - JAMES EDMUND HERATY 1874-1956
James Edmund Heraty was the eldest son of Peter Heraty and Ellen Sullivan.. Tradition in Irish families stated that James would inherit the family farm which was located in Eden, Wisconsin, just south of Fond du Lac and forty two miles northeast of Milwaukee.
J.E Heraty did not want to become a farmer and against his parents wishes he moved to Milwaukee to study medicine at Marquette University. The aspiring Dr. earned his way through medical school by working on the trolley cars. He graduated from medical school in 1901.
After graduation in 1901, J.E. worked for the railroad in Fond du Lac and after one year he moved to Bloomington, Wisconsin and established a medical practice. Here he met Florence Elizabeth Brady and married her in 1908. She was twenty two, he was thirty-four
When World War1 broke out J.E. Heraty was stationed at Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1917, Florence had contracted the Influenza which manifested into Tuberculosis. Her parents moved to California with Florence and their three children in hopes of improving Florence's health.
Upon discharge from the military, J.E Heraty accepted a job in LaCross, Wisconsin. He rented a house on 6th and Market Street and sent for his family. Florence's mother, Laura Brady brought Florence and the children to LaCross by train in August of 1919.
Florence was admitted to the T.B sanitarium in Onalaska and died February20, 1920.
Peter and Ellen Heraty, at some point moved to Milwaukee with the other two children John and Louise. John graduated from Marquette Medical School and Louise became a nurse. Neither ever married.
